The first suburb of Tampa was established in the 1880’s and originally coined “The Highlands”. This is our southernmost neighborhood in The Heights community and its borders are the MLK Blvd to the north, N Boulevard to the west, I-275 to the east and downtown Tampa to the south. The neighborhood is also locally considered to encompass the riverfront expansion north of downtown.

The original homes of this neighborhood are some of the most historic Victorian and craftsman bungalows in the city. There has been considerable economic development and renovation in this area which has brought in many new local small businesses as well as an expansion of downtown infrastructure into the southern part of the neighborhood.

A huge amount of city investment has been realized in this southern riverfront area of Tampa Heights. The Tampa River walk was conceived in the mid 70’s and finally came to fruition operationally in the mid 2010’s. This also brought further private investment projects including the development of The Heights Public Market (Tampa Armature), the Ulele complex & brewery, as well as many office buildings and condominiums which are currently under construction. Water Works park, the River Walk extension, the Straz waterfront and the municipal water access facilities are all other projects that have benefitted this growth. The integrated in this area offers concerts, water access, dog walking & exercise facilities, children’s facilities and general recreation space. There are also many civic, community and social services located within the central core of this community.

The Tampa Heights Civic Association serves its residents, businesses and friends with established community organizations and neighborhood watch initiatives. The Tampa Heights Civic Association  supports various citizen advocacy efforts, including art and improvement projects for the community such as murals and landscaping efforts.
